Starting on February 15th, the members of the Yokohama Chapter of JALT (YoJALT) will host an action research project. The main purpose of this project is to provide teachers with an opportunity to learn about their teaching context in a collaborative setting. We will be using “Doing Teacher Research” by D. Freeman as a guide. The initial aim, which may change with input from those in attendance, is to cover one chapter per month. There are 8 chapters in total. For the proposed schedule, please see below.

Most chapters will be accompanied by presentations - three slots are already taken - if you are interested in making presentations on the context of the March, April, October and January chapters (see below for headings) please contact J. Campbell at yojaltprogram@yojalt.org.

(Proposed) Schedule
February 15th – meet and go over aims for the project. This will include a brief overview of the text by Colin Skeates, followed by discussion on what areas of change/investigation (if any) individuals may have. The main focus of this meeting is to build trust from which future discussions on problems can arise in a non-threatening environment. It is a lot easier to talk through a problem with other teachers if you know them!

March 15th – Discussion on Chapter one “What is research?”
April 25th – Chapter 2 “Framing the Teacher-Research Cycle” Presenter needed.

May 17th – Chapter 3 “An Account of Beginning Teacher-Research” - this chapter deals with some thoughts from a teacher implementing action research in his context for the first time. Jonathon Lynch will present on using a classroom response system. Details on ELT Calendar.

June (date has not yet been finalized, but may be on the 6th) – Chapter 4 “Forming an Inquiry: From Questions to Planning the Project” Presenter- Andy Boon

August – Break

September (Date yet to be decided) – Chapter 5 “Collecting and analyzing data” Presenter - Greg Sholdt

October (Date yet decided) – Chapter 6 “Teacher Receiving Feedback” Presenter needed

November (Date yet to be decided) – JALT National; BREAK

December (Date yet to be decided) – Chapter 7 “Going Public” Presenter- Andy Boon

January (Date yet to be decided) – Chapter 8 “Beyond the Cycle” – Presenter needed

If you have any questions, please contact Colin Skeates at yojaltpresident@yojalt.org.

The discussion was run in such a way that those who had not read the chapter were still able to participate fully.  This is congruous with the group’s desire to make this project as accessible as possible and to encourage people to join whether or not they have attended previous meetings.
After the small group discussion, points brought up by each group were shared with
